British and European Quadrathlon Championships held at The Brigg Bomber.
This was held on last Sunday, my hat off to the organisers, this was a great event. Due to the lack of entrants in my 'Sprint' distance I decided a few weeks before to compete in the longer 'Olympic' distance, in other words twice my normal distance. So training was the order of the day as I frantically tried to up my distance, after all I am used to competing for say around 1hour 5mins, now I was looking at over the 3 hours at Swimming, kayaking, biking and running.
Due to some bad weather the race organisers did a fantastic job of re
designing the course, with all the disciplines starting and finishing
near transition. I think many will agree this was a great success, same
distances of course, same bike route, out and back for the swim and
kayak and a potentially harder out and back for the run.
My main under 23 age group competition in this event withdrew at very short notice, great shame, I was really looking forward to competing against the current British Champion, a former world champ and last year’s world ‘silver’ medalist. I suppose all I can do is compare my time with his previous time for this event in which I beat him by 35 or so minutes so very pleased in a time off 02:51:39
I only hope he can make it to the next quad at Box End on the 5th of August.
The splits are out and am chuffed to have the 3rd fasted bike leg, I was only a minute behind race winner Mat Stephenson and 12 seconds behind Enduroman Phil Binch.(note to self, find 13 seconds from somewhere)
It seems that everyone had a great time (if not very tiring)
and it was great to have so many athletes who had obviously travelled
from far away, clearly dedicated to their sport! I noticed a number of vehicles
with foreign plates. I myself (with help from my support crew of course) only travelled
for a few hours that day. If I got it right ,2nd placer, Stefan Teichert from Germany is also going to compete at next month’s
Quadrac Racing event at Box End Park. It will be great to compete with these guys again at my more
comfortable sprint distance.

The 'updated' routes
Little montage
Recently I joined St Neots Cycling Club so I could take part in their Thursday night time trials. I thought and as it happens, was right, that this would help increase my pace.
Now, when I mention to friends how long it takes me to complete the 11.2m course, they don’t seem that impressed, seems that many TT courses are flattish and 'flatter' the riders, not this one. The goal for ours is to dip under the magic 30 minutes. The TT course is very hilly, very demanding and definitely a very hard course. Many of the older guys (no offence meant!) have explained that if you can conquer this course, then a downhill course with the wind behind you would be a doddle. I have yet to find out, but intend to try!
This is the SNCC TT course profile
On Sunday SNCC held an event called ‘The Ashman’s Trophy’ on Sunday, this is a handicap race and you complete two of the terrifying laps… 22.4 miles - going up and down the hilly course!!
So the profile looks like this…
The very odd SNCC club ritual that I still can't quite get right.
Pleased to say, I managed to clock a 58.13 - didn't win the trophy as I had a tough handicap, but was third fastest on the day, so stoked with that.
Who cares about timings... Really...?
My new secret weapon... Shhhh..!!!
Back to Boxend for the TRiCrazy Quadrac Racing off road Evening series (number 3 of 4)... When will we get nice weather for this event..!!! Although saying that, it was still a great turn out , someone had very kindly cut the grass freshly, especially for the race. After the first half a lap my front brake had locked up until it was basically impossible to cycle. I decided to unblock my brakes (its a lot more difficult then it sounds!!) I cycled the rest of the course with a disconnected front brake and a rubbish rear brake (need to fix that). I ended up 2nd over all by a few seconds.
reconstruction (not actual footage!)
I also feel a bit for David of Tri-Crazy who we see regularly with his stall at Box End Park (he does a 'try before you buy' thing with wetsuits - very useful) I think he deserves a bit of nice weather too!
I swim at Box End Park here are the opening times
